Arbaso means ancestors in Basque language and encompasses the purpose of the hotel: an authentic experience based on the Basque culture and gastronomy and for the five basic senses, all this in the very heart of San Sebastián, Spain. Arbaso also comprehends an appreciation for the family and the origins themselves.
COMMON AREAS
The entrance reminds an entrance to a house as the reception is an open space where prevails the warmth and personalized attention from our team all around the fireplace. It is the space to welcome you and let you enjoy the warmth of a home while living together with the locals.
MUROS DE LUZ – AITOR ORTIZ
A site-specific intervention on one of the walls of Arbaso consisting of a photograph of the Markina black marble quarries, simulating a solid block of stone from the quarry itself. It incorporates the chimney hole as a source of light and heat inside the wall, and its light filters through a cut that fissures the stone.
the artist – AITOR ORTIZ
With a recognized career, this Bilbao born artist has participated in several national and international projects and his work has been exhibited in collections of the Reina Sofía National Art Museum, the Iberdrola collection, and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, among others. Ortiz works with space and forms to pose a series of visual and cognitive unknowns through the dissolution and transmutation of the reality.
INSPIRED IN THE BASQUE COUNTRY
The uniforms have been designed and manufactured locally by Irati Guarretxena, owner of Letitare. They are inspired in the traditional Basque clothing and made with natural and exclusive materials. The waistcoat of the harrijasotzaile stone-lifters, the gerriko of the jai alai players or the use of such materials like ribbon or leather are part of the Arbaso concept.
FOR THE SUSTAINABILITY
Reducing the use of single use plastics and opting for measures that minimize the environmental impact, at Arbaso we strongly believe in sustainability. We prioritize the proximity of the products and suppliers, most of them being from the Basque Country. Starting from FIARK arquitectos the architects’ studio and down to the last detail, especially in terms of furniture and materials.
